Solomon Islands defeats Tonga

The match kicked off to Solomon Island’s favour as they applied pressure to get the early goal against their opponents.
Emelita Moala provided Solomon Island’s first scare of the match with her shot but Betty Sade was able to make the save for her team.
The breakthrough Solomon Island sought came about in the 12th minute when Ileen Pegi dribbled past several Tonga defenders before sending the ball past Lupe Likiliki.
After their goal the Solomon Island side lost some composure and the Tongans pressed forward for the equaliser which, unfortunately for them, failed to come.
With only about halfway through the first stanza Solomon Island suffered a big blow with the injury to their key forward Crystal Bwakolo. Bwakolo had to be substituted and the injury is likely to rule her out of the championship.
Ella Misibini puts Solomon Islands further ahead on the score sheet with a well weighted chip that sank behind the Tonga goalkeeper to give her team some positive news after Bwakolo’s championship threatening injury.
The score line of 2 – 0 is maintained until halftime.
The match evens out in the second half as the Tongans fight their way back in terms of possession and chances. However, they are still not able to break the Solomon Island deadlock.
Solomon Island makes a double substitution bringing in Mesalyn Saepio and Mary Maefiti for Ella Misibini and Alice Olomane.
Betty Maenu’u puts Solomon Islands to 3 – 0 in front from the penalty spot after a foul was committed inside the Tonga 18 yard box in the 74th minute.
Solomon Island consolidates its game and keeps Tonga out of possession while keeping their front pack in search for more goals.
The final goal of the match is scored by Pegi who curls a shot around the Tonga goalkeeper and into the top corner for Solomon Island’s fourth.
Solomon Island will meet Papua New Guinea in their second match at the OFC Nations Cup. Papua New Guinea is one of the top teams and are favourites to win this match.
