Kirios breakthrough to Nations Cup semis

Their 0 – 0 draw with winless Fiji saw them qualify after Tonga was beaten by group leaders Papua New Guinea 3 – 0.
The match was tough but evenly played with both teams missing some good opportunities to take the game home in either half.
That mentioned it was the Fijians who looked more threatening in the first half.
Bela Ratubalavu almost put Fiji in front with her free kick which went just high and her shot from a rebound a few minutes later suffered a similar fate.
Unaisi Vatulili followed up Ratubalavu’s efforts with her driving run into the Solomon Islands danger zone but she sent her shot wide.
Solomon Island’s first clear chance to score in the first half came in the 29th minute when Veronica Tolivaka put in a cross for Prudence Fula but Fula’s header misses the mark.
The Kirios again came close to scoring just before halftime, this time through Ileen Pegi who latched on to a Tolivaka cross but found Lice Waqailiti to tough to beat.
Returning in the second half Solomon Island looked for the all important early goal but their best was a saved shot from Fula.
Midfielder Betty Maenu tried her luck with a hopeful shot that went wide of the mark in the 65th minute.
At the other end of the field the Fijians were also struggling and could not convert their chances.
Kurukaba Ligavola almost breaks the deadlock with her long chip and Betty Sade was forced to stretch to make the save.
Despite their efforts neither team could make any imprint on the score sheet as the referee signalled the end of the match.
Solomon Islands will meet New Zealand in the semi finals scheduled for Wednesday 6th October, 2010.
Papua New Guinea will meet Cook Islands in the second semi final on the same date.
