Capital decides on new executive

HFA’s annual congress took place on Sunday at the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) conference hall with a majority turn out from its thirty-six member clubs. Also part of the agenda was the financial and activity report but all the energy, it seemed, was reserved for the election which drew passionate speeches from the candidates.
The results were a landslide victory for the William Lai led camp who took up every seat they were vying for. Lai, who is president of the powerful KOSSA Football Club, won by a huge margin against Toata Molea and the incumbent Robert Gerea who was looking for another term as president.
The new vice president is local business man and president of Hana Football Club, Hudson Wakio. Former Solomon Islands international, Mahlon Houkaraua of Koloale, takes up the position of treasurer and the post of general secretary goes to president of Sokamora Football Club and current Bonitos team manager, Leonard Paia.
The new ordinary members are George Walenenea of Kukum Bombers Football Club, Dickson Anga of Sunbeam Football Club, and Matai Vave of Naha Football Club. Vave is also a former Solomon Islands international.
The former executive committee of HFA was voted in on July 2008 following a period where the association was run by a SIFF appointed normalising committee. Gerea took up the presidency then and Aloysio Ma’ahanoa, who is also the SIFF treasurer, was the general secretary. Kenneth Bulehite was the treasurer and the ordinary members were Siosi Dioko, Lawrence Waihaho and Vincent Anisi.
HFA was established in 1956 and had been a major organiser of football competitions in Solomon Islands until SIFF took over in 1999. HFA leagues in the 1980s and1990s were a gathered great following from the public with clubs like Rangers, Sunbeam, Kakamora and Police dominating the scene. More recently, due to the lack of its own facilities, HFA competitions suffered.
