Honiara launches 2013 season

A parade and formal opening ceremony marked the launching as the thirty-four of the thirty-six clubs of the Solomon Islands capital looked forward to a busy football season. A sizeable crowd turned up to witness the ceremony but even more turned up in the afternoon for the two premier division matches that kicked off the season.
For the HFA general secretary, Leonard Paia, the launching paves the way for football to return to Honiara after 12 months of uncertainty.
“We are very pleased to launch our season for 2013, it is the result of a lot of hard work but our desire to provide a strongly run competition for our clubs gave us the impetus. We now look forward to a busy year and hope that football fans will come out to support the league,” Paia says.
Action on the field was a little loft-sided on the opening day with Koloale and KOSSA both registering big wins. Koloale, stifled a strong Rangers side to finish with the first victory of the season – 5-2 win. KOSSA were made to work hard against Naha in the first half but the second half saw the former O-League side finish 5-1 up.
More mouth watering football followed on Sunday with another double fixture to entertain the football hungry capital. Solomon Warriors made light work of Northern United in the first match of the afternoon with an 8-1 win on the back of a dazzling performance. The second fixture was a closer encounter with Marist edging over Zome Mars 3-2.
Two more matches will be played this week to round up the first cycle for the HFA Premier Division. Former champions Makuru will take on the recently promoted CDL Lekas on Tuesday while Junior Flamingo have a date with Sunbeam on Thursday.
