Our Telekom backs national teams with $350 000

The cheque was presented to the President of the Solomon Islands Football Federation, Martin Alufurai, at a corporate dinner organised on Saturday at the Sea King Restaurant in Honiara. Our Telekom Marketing Manager, Robertson Szetu, made the announcement whilst the company’s Executive Director, Steve Hall, made the handover.
Szetu said that the sponsorship package for the national teams comes part of the continued partnership agreement between Our Telekom and the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF).
“Our Telekom is proud to support our national teams with this financial grant to both the men’s and women’s national teams. Our Telekom continues to be a partner of football and we hope that our support will help our teams bring back a good result for Solomon Islands,” Szetu said.
In receiving the payment Alufurai said that football is privileged to have the support of Our Telekom and their assistance shows a strong commitment from one of the biggest business houses in Solomon Islands.
“We are thankful for the support which Our Telekom has offered. The teams will surely benefit from this assistance and I want to assure our partners that we are going for medals at the Pacific Games,” Alufurai said adding that Our Telekom is leading the way in corporate sponsorships in sports and their support for football is heard far and wide.
“Our Telekom made history in 2010 when they signed their $5.3m sponsorship deal with SIFF and their support has impressed football people from the region and also outside. Once again, Our Telekom has proven to us and the rest of the country their commitment and I am sure that the appreciation is felt not only by us football officials but also by the players and the public,” Alufurai said.
The sponsorship package will prove to be more than handy as the Pacific Games represents the single most expensive international excursion for the SIFF. Combined, SIFF will be sending 40 athletes and 6 officials to the Pacific Games. With a contingent this large comes a $150 000 participation fee from the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI).
However, the total costs for SIFF alone would expect to extend to over half a million as other areas like equipment, player remuneration and preparation camps and so forth come into play. SIFF is already earmarking part of Our Telekom’s sponsorship package to meet costs for equipping the national football teams.
SIFF general secretary, Eddie Ngava, says that football is a team sport so always a huge cost is involved when sending teams overseas.
“It is in the nature of football to attract large costs because when you send a team you are talking about sending 20 plus people. In this regard, SIFF always appreciates the support of the government, business houses and the public via gate-takings at Lawson Tama,” Ngava says.
Our Telekom also supported the SIFF local events like the National Beach Soccer, National Futsal Competition and the National Women’s Day all held earlier this year.
