KOSSA 2 – Western United 4

The weather offered little hope for any football matches to take place in the afternoon with heavy down pours that started well before dawn. The rainfall was only punctuated hourly periods of calm so organisers decided only one match could be played to protect the pitch from damage.
This means that the Malaita Kingz v X-Beam clash, second scheduled match for the day, would join the growing list of catch up matches.
For KOSSA the match started disastrously as Western United raced off to 2-0 lead courtesy of some goalkeeper handling errors. Himson Teleda stole the ball from Severino Aefi in the 6th minute and slotted home the opener. The winger extended the lead just before the half hour mark when a loose ball dropped nicely for him to tap into the open net.
James Naka, who returned to the club that saw him draw fame as a lethal striker, scored for KOSSA in the 34th minute but that was not enough to break the stride of Western United front line. Benjamin Totori, broke his 9-match drought with his new club to score his first goal of the season to ensure Western United were comfortably ahead in first half stoppage time.
The second half offered a roughly equal chance to the clubs to win but it was Western United who managed to secure all three points despite a drop in performance after the break.
The fluidity and pace of the match also slowed down due to the wetter conditions on the pitch. A number of yellow cards were also flashed as tempers got the better of players from both sides of the camp.
Hudson Felani threw some hope KOSSA’s way following the break with a header home but Totori’s spectacular free kick late in the match ensured Western United sailed home comfortably.
Western United progress to the third spot in the Telekom S-League table while KOSSA slip to fifth, outside of the prize range, courtesy of the result. Solomon Warriors and Koloale remain in front despite not yet playing a match in the second round.
