Babatana crowned champions of Lauru

While the heavy rain experienced muddied up the pitch spirits refused to be dampened on the final day as expectations superseded all other emotions. The community of Taro and villages nearby was out in force to watch the action on the pitch and court.
Local government officials turned up to witness the proceedings of the final days of competitions in the annual event. Tournament organisers were pleased with the turnout and ruled the event a major success.
In football, four teams took part in the competition namely Babatana Ward, Senga, Choiseul Bay and Taro Station. In the semi-finals Babatana Ward booked their spot in the grand final with a narrow win over Choiseul Bay while Taro Station defeated Senga 3-1 to progress.
The finals followed with Senga outclassing Choiseul Bay to claim third position in a hotly contested match. The grand final match between Babatana Ward and Taro Station was filled with drama as the both teams were 1-all at the end of regulation.
Babatana Ward finally broke through just before the end of the first half of extra time with the winner which they held to finish as the champions of Choiseul football.
Four teams took part in the netball event with Tepazaka finishing as 2014 champions after defeating Vuruvachu by 29-28. Babatana Ward and Taba played out the losers final with the former emerging as winners.
Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) supported the event with match balls and competition gear. The football component of the Lauru Games was organised by Lauru Football Association (LFA), a provincial affiliate of SIFF.
Honiara based referees, Jackson Namo and Bernard Mutukera, also officiated in the competition.
