Katukatus gather positives from win

The victory did not come cheap for the Katukatus as they had to put everything into the game for the result and made some losses in the process including yellow cards to 2 key players and injuries to another 2.
According to Head of Delegation, Phillip Ohoto’ona, the boys had to fight hard to keep their focus on their objectives against a physically strong and active New Caledonia side.
“The boys were able to keep their composure and as a result were able to come away with this victory in spite of the toughness of the game,” Ohoto’ona says.
“We are happy with this win but we are not over the moon. A lot of work lies ahead of us and we need to sort out our lapses from the first game and improve in our remaining fixtures,” Ohoto’ona says. “This first game has certainly given us the benchmark and we know that we must work harder if we want to win our group.”
The first goal came from the head of forward John Bitiai who tipped a long pass from Junior Albert over New Caledonia keeper, Jordan Usike, who had come out too far from his goal line after 11 minutes of play.
Six (6) minutes later New Caledonia levelled the score line with Thomas Buscaglia’s volley after the Solomon Islands defence fails to clear the ball away from their penalty area.
The winner came 3 minutes into the second half through Atana Fa’arodo Jnr. who found the back of the net after the New Caledonia backline could not clear a corner kick and the Katukatus managed to hold on to their lead for the remainder of the game to win.
Tahiti were 8 – 0 winners over Tonga in the second Group B match of the day.
Solomon Islands will play Tahiti in their next game which is scheduled for NZT 13:30pm (11:30am Solomon Islands time) on Tuesday 11 January.
