Bilikiki begin preparations

Bilikiki team manager, Reuben Oimae, announced today that the team will meet at 4:30pm today to inform squad members of their training program. The meeting will take place at Lawson Tama and all players in the training squad are required to attend.
“This is a very important meeting for the players and management and I strongly call upon everyone to turn up. This meeting will set the pace for our training program and we look forward to meeting everyone,” Oimae says.
For the first month training will take place twice weekly but it will intensify as the qualifiers draw nearer. Former players Gideon Omokirio and Eddie Ngaitini have been tasked with looking after the training squad, however, the duo’s appointments have not yet been formalized by national body, Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF).
There are 17 players in the Bilikiki training squad with veterans from the initial team in 2006 still making their presence felt. However, the majority are new players with less international experience but they add the promise of youthful athleticism to balance the team out.
A surprise re-call has been given to Samson Takayama who starred in the 2006 and 2007 team but left soon after. Takayama had been training with the team in 2012 and his chances of making the final squad are good according to Oimae.
“Samson is one of the best beach soccer players in Solomon Islands and after some years making a name for himself in 11-a-side football he has decided to return to our discipline. He has natural qualities that make him special and it will require hard work for the younger players to beat him to a spot in the final 12,” Oimae says.
This is a big year for the sand based discipline in Oceania as the region is set to go beach soccer crazy with the first ever hosting of a FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup final in the region. Jardin de Paofai in Tahiti will host top teams from all over the globe in a statement that the pacific is well and truly adopting the code that was introduced formally less than a decade ago. It will also be the first time for two Oceania countries to play in the same FIFA world cup tournament as the Tiki Toa are already in the competition as hosts. They will be joined by the winner of the OFC championship.
Bilikiki dominated beach soccer in Oceania for five years before it was dethroned by the Tiki Toa (Tahiti) in Tahiti in 2011. A further rattling of Bilikiki’s confidence was provided by Vanuatu last year when they won an Asia-Pacific beach soccer invitation tournament in Gold Coast. Hence, there is much encouragement for the current team to restore Solomon Islands to past glory this year.
The OFC Beach Soccer Championship, the qualifying tournament for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, will take place from June 12-14 in Tahiti.
