Women’s team draws friendly with Honiara Select

The match refused to come alive for the national team and they struggled to gather any threatening advances against their opponents.
New recruit, Annie Bwakolo, did her best upfront for the women’s national team but good defending from the Honiara Select stopped her from giving her side any advantage.
Their most promising opportunity in the first half came from a long through ball by midfielder Mary Maefiti but forward Prudence Fula was not able to connect well with her attempt.
Honiara Select played strongly and applied good pressure on the women’s national team especially in the midfield area where they were able to break down their buildups. This was not so hard to do because the women’s national team channeled most of their passes to Veronica Tolivaka on the right.
The second half saw a much improved performance from the national team. They used both their left and right flanks to mount their attack. This added one more passing channel to their midfield department and gave the Honiara Select defenders a hard time blocking their passes.
The substitution in of Mesalyn Saepio also added some spark to their offence but time and again they were denied by tough defending from the Honiara Select backline.
They had a good opportunity to score from a corner by Ella Misibini but Audrey Galo jumped a little too early to head the ball and her attempt was easy enough for the Cathy Aihunu to clear away.
In the end the national team looked disappointed not to have won a game most who were watching were expecting them to win.
Despite finishing the game 0 – 0 Head Coach, Timothy Inifiri, said that this is an improved performance by the national team from their first friendly match against the same opponents.
The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Competitions Department is organizing 2 more friendly matches for the team before they leave for New Zealand on the 24th of this month.
The OFC Women’s Nations Cup will kick off on 29th September.
