Football festivity ends in Goldie College

A total of 16 boys teams and 4 girls teams took part in the inter-dormitory competition which was played in the 7-a-side code and 11-a-side code for boys and girls respectively.
The competition exposed some hidden footballing talents which have impressed the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) delegation that had the opportunity of witnessing the finals.
The boys’ competition grand final was played on Friday with Goldie College Slovakia (LEARN&play team) taking on Goldie College Germany. The match ended 1-all at full time and went into penalty shootout to decide the winner. Goldie College Germany eventually won the match scoring 5 penalties to their opponent’s 3.
Due to the low number of teams in the girls competition it was played in the round-robin format with all teams playing at least 1 match against their opportunity. The LEARN&play girls team won the championship after winning all of their matches.
The prize presentation ceremony was held on Saturday at the school dining hall. Students and staff of Goldie College who came to witness the occasion as well as the SIFF team that visited the school.
LEARN&play Project Manager, Phillip Ohoto’ona, said that the project office is willing to support the competition because the LEARN&play office in Goldie College has taken a leading role in its organization.
“Goldie College is one of our partner schools under the LEARN&play memorandum of understanding so the office stands ready to support activities organized by the school,” Ohoto’ona said. “The competition has provided an opportunity for LEARN&play students to play competitive football.”
Goldie College LEARN&play coach Taylor Qorataru, said that the competition was organized to give students a taste of competitive football.
“We are isolated on an island without access to top competitions and so the best we can do is organize competitions ourselves,” Qorataru said. “This will help the development of our players.”
The competition was joinly organized by a team of former Goldie College students led by Abel Kotali. Crooners Ronnie Riti (Paeva) and Samson Saeni (Sharzy) travelled with Kotali for the program and performed to the cheers from the students after the prize giving ceremony.
