New start date for 2014 S-League

A circular by the S-League Board to clubs indicated the new kick-off date of Saturday 6th September. The new kick-off date was well received by the participating clubs, especially, Honiara based ones whose competition just concluded a week ago.
The reason for the postponement is largely to do with Lawson Tama pitch which is in dire need of repair following a combination of the impact of flooding and the local football league. Certain patches inside the pitch need removal while other sections need treatment in a process that will take at least two weeks to complete.
The S-League Board was ready to commence the competition this weekend but was asked by the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) Turf Department to consider their request to allow some repair time for Lawson Tama.
Full competition
The S-League Board has also revealed that the new season will feature a return to the competition format originally adopted by SIFF two years ago.
The season will open with a two-round league that will result in the identification of the country’s club representative at the 2015 OFC Champions League. Following the league the championship series will return for more exciting football action.
Nine clubs are to be featured this season with the readmission of Marist Football Club to the competition. Marist was dropped in the 2013 season after failing to pay their registration fees.
Clubs preparing well
Meanwhile the clubs have spent the last month finalising their 25-man squads and several have included friendly matches against local competition as they look to gear up for the S-League.
Most clubs are expecting the competition this season to be a tough and have booked formidable players for the new season. Western United leads the pack with a range of new faces while others are clinging to their regulars from the last season.
