Solympics win local friendly

Nerves were on edge as Solympics took the field for their very first friendly match since they started training in February. It took them some time to settle into the game and while they easily gathered control of the midfield making their possession count on the scoreboard was another matter altogether.
Things started to go smoothly for them when midfielder James Egeta struck home a volley from 16 yards out after 17 minutes. However, chances also fell to Johan Doiwale and Micah Lea’alafa but neither could convert and the Solympics only had a narrow lead at the break. The temptation to dribble proved too strong on more than one occasion and the Bilikiki/Kurukuru side often saved by their opponent’s indecision rather than their defensive strength.
The second half saw more organisation and more chances for the Solympics and any question about who was in command was settled when Micah Lea’alafa hammered home their second from a Moffat Kilifa set up on the left. Kilifa later got one for himself to take the score line to 3-0 completing a brilliant individual run on the left before shooting past Bilikiki/Kurukuru goalkeeper, Paul Huia.
With just minutes left on the clock Himson Teleda turned in their fourth of the game and that proved to be the final act of the game. The defence of Solympics was only minimally tested during the game, however, their forwards saw plenty of action and the management were happy with the result.
Solympics team manager, Gideon Omokirio, was happy with his players and said that getting the spirit of winning in training is as important as getting it during the competition.
“To win in a competition we have to know how to win during training and today we have achieved an important result. However, more important for the management team are the areas that indentified as needing more attention before the team is ready and it is good that we had this opportunity to analyse our performance,” Omokirio said.
The team is planning another friendly match with local club KOSSA before they leave for the competition later this week.
