TSL receives Our Telekom payout

The handover of the cheque was done at the Our Telekom conference room on Tuesday. Chairperson of the Our Telekom management board, John Beverly, presented the SBD$400 000 cheque to the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) treasure and chairperson of the Telekom S-League, Aloysio Ma’ahanoa. Members of the media, Our Telekom marketing staff and Telekom S-League staff witnessed the handover ceremony.
In his short speech before the handover Beverly said that the sponsorship is about promoting football for the children of Solomon Islands.
“We want the children of Solomon Islands to play football and a decision was made several years ago for a commitment from Our Telekom to support this goal with $5 million,” Beverly said. “Our Telekom has always maintained its support for the development of football in Solomon Islands – the much beloved sport of our nation and we are pleased to provide assistance that reaches all the teams participating through SIFF competitions.”
Beverly also talked about what the Our Telekom/SIFF partnership has gained and the potential that remains to be tapped.
“We enjoy our commitment to football, this is a good road to walk on,” Beverly said. “This partnership is visible through an expanded television coverage of global football events and young Solomon Islanders are able to see some of the top players in the world play the game.”
“Our Telekom greatly supports the hosting of the Telekom S-League matches in the provinces as the competition grows. At the same time we are venturing into live TV coverage of matches in the Telekom S-League broadcast to Auki, Gizo and later for Lata.”
Ma’ahanoa thanked Our Telekom for the grant to the Telekom S-League and said that SIFF values greatly this partnership because it continues to make real impacts on the ground.
“As chairperson of the TSL (Telekom S-League) I wish to convey to the board and management of Our Telekom our sincere thank you for their continued support for football development in Solomon Islands. SIFF greatly values this partnership because it is one of substance and has enabled Solomon Islands to see more national football events take place including the national soccer league,” Ma’ahanoa said.
Ma’ahanoa also outlined SIFF’s commitment to accounting for all funds provided by Our Telekom and ensuring that they are used for the Telekom S-League.
“SIFF reiterates its commitment to account for all the funds given by Our Telekom through this sponsorship deal. I am happy to say that we are able to receive this grant today because we have already reported for the first season of the TSL,” Ma’ahanoa said.
In a response to a question from the media about whether the funds will be shared with the clubs in the Telekom S-League Ma’ahanoa explained that Our Telekom grants are used for prizes, administration and marketing costs only.
“SIFF uses the funds from Our Telekom directly for administration and prizes and also promotion through the media and up till now we have not given any Our Telekom money to the clubs in the TSL. We expected clubs to be independent entities that generate or source their own administration funds. However, I wish to mention that in the last season SIFF delivered $60 000 to each club in the TSL as part of its development support and this was funded out of the federation’s own account,” Ma’ahanoa explained.
The $400 000 payout from Our Telekom is part of the $1.6million sponsorship package for the second season of the Telekom S-League. SIFF will apply for the remainder of the funds in the coming year and they are disbursed only upon submission of reports on usage.
A similar amount was received by SIFF for the first season of the Telekom S-League. More than a third of this fund will go to meet the prize bill for both the league and championship series while remainder goes to marketing and administration and logistical expenses.
Our Telekom is the current major partner of SIFF in a partnership that operates under a SBD$5.3million deal signed in 2010. Our Telekom also sponsors other SIFF events including the Solomon Cup, the National Kids Football, Cultural and Education Festival, the National U20 Championship, the National Futsal Championship and the National Beach Soccer Championship.
