Festival for women’s football this weekend

The festival is funded by FIFA and targets the involvement of at least 200 young women in Honiara. It will be facilitated by the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) technical department under the leadership of Diane Justus, SIFF women’s development officer.
According to Ms. Justus the event will take place over two days to allow maximum participation from young female footballers.
“We want to see the maximum number of young girls turn up for the event so we are spreading out the event over two days to allow other children to attend on Sunday,” Ms. Justus says.
Two venues will be used to host the event on Saturday namely the SIFF academy pitch and Lawson Tama stadium. The SIFF academy will cater for the East Honiara population while Lawson Tama is for the participants from the Central and West Honiara areas.
Ms. Justus explains that the event is to promote awareness of women’s football, issues challenging young women and the stakeholders who are supporting young women in various engagements.
“The main agenda is for us to start promoting the first women’s national football league which will take place from September. Additionally, this is an opportunity to promote other women’s football programmes as well as their main sponsors and partners who support women,” Ms. Justus says.
The activities will be launched at 8:30am on Saturday and will feature a parade, speeches and entertainment. This will be followed by games and fun activities for children organised by recent participants of the FIFA women’s refresher course.
Later on there will be an opportunity to watch some of the top women footballers in Solomon Islands in action in an exhibition match that is to take place at the SIFF academy pitch.
The event is free for the public to watch and people are encouraged to come out and support our young women in football.
