Winning start for women’s football

Jemina David’s deft header spares the Solomon Islands a close 1-0 victory over Vanuatu in a dominant afternoon in the Group C opener of the Sol2023 Pacific Games at the Lawson Tama stadium.

The Batram Suri side endured misfiring opportunities in front of the goal spurning out golden opportunities on target in the opening minutes of play, but getting those three points is all that matters says head coach Suri.

“A positive start to our campaign – going up against a strong Vanuatu team is not easy.

“Three points? I’m satisfied,” Suri told reporters in a post-match

The Solomon Islands started with possession and forced some early openings. Veronica Tolivaka forged a couple of chances in the first half but failed to find the net ending the opening half goalless.

Composed, Vanuatu held the host team throughout most of the playing time until David was picked up on running into the final third.

“There are a lot of things to work on from here. A win is a win and I’m happy,” says Suri.

The toughest group in the women’s category, Solomon Islands plays their next match against Fiji – a highly anticipated clash next week on Thursday.
