TSL coaches attend refresher course

The SIFF Competition department along with the SIFF Technical Department has organized a 2-day refresher coaching workshop for S-League Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches starting on Tuesday and completed on Wednesday 13 July 2022 in Honiara.

The workshop was held in the SIFF Conference Room at the Art Gallery. The two workshops were conducted by SIFF Senior Men’s Head Coach Filipe, a professional coach from Spain who also heads the High Performance and National Teams department.

Day one covers Team Management and Coach Profile, Effective Team, Values and principles of coaching, coaching areas of knowledge, coaching methodology as well as training structure, values and principles, and design and modification of training tasks.
Day 2 covers Physical Training fundamentals. Looking at Resistance, speed, strength, and flexibility as well as Soccer training periodization which includes planning before the season (preseason training) during the season and off-season, and how to draw up an annual training plan. During the season, they have to prepare session plans and compile them with the assessment which will be done by the SIFF Technical Department. Monitoring will be done by Filipe and Technical Director, Moses Toata to help each of the coaches accredited with an OFC C-License and progress further to get an OFC B-License.

According to SIFF Competitions Director, Gerald Oiaka, SIFF is trying to align it’s regulations with OFC and FIFA regarding the qualification of coaches in the top tier and youth leagues.

“There are a few B-license coaches who will be assessed as well to confirm their accreditations. OFC and FIFA competitions are very strict with coaching accreditation, if a club has a coach
without coaching accreditation, SIFF will impose fines and the coach’s concern will not be with the club during matches. That is why coaching in the S-League requires that all franchise clubs must have a coach with a C or B-license,” he said.

Oiaka stressed this has not been done in the past and the competition department sees the importance of coaching accreditation.

“S-League regulations and club licensing spell out very clearly the qualification for coaching a franchise club in the S League. To help the National Team to perform well, we need to empower our coaches to understand how to become effective coaches.

“This program will continue with TSL U19 coaches and Solrais Women’s Premier League Coaches,” Oiaka stated.
