Stage is set for the first-ever OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup in Honiara.

Solomon Islands is set to host the first-ever OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup, which kicks off tomorrow, Saturday, August 17, at the Friendship Hall in Honiara.

The tournament marks a historic step forward for women’s futsal for both the host nation and Oceania, a celebration of the progress of women’s futsal.

Five nations will converge in a week-long competition – with a FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup on the line, where the nations will not only be vying for the first-ever Oceania title but also for the opportunity to represent Oceania on the world stage next year in the Philippines.

For the host nation, this tournament carries special significance – as the home of the 6 times OFC Futsal Men’s Champions.

14-member squad, blending both seasoned veterans and fresh talent, is set to impress the football-loving nation on home soil.

The team’s preparations have been extensive, reflecting the dedication and passion that futsal holds within the local sports communities.

During a pre-tournament press conference, Head Coach Arthur Barko shared his excitement and optimism about leading the team in this pioneering quest.

“We are pleased and honored to host the first-ever OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup here in the Solomon Islands. We hope that all the teams enjoy their time here and experience the warmth of our hospitality,” said Barko.

“This tournament is more than just about competition; it’s about promoting and encouraging the growth of women’s futsal in our country.

“Men’s futsal has gained popularity over the years, and now we want to see that same passion transferred to the women’s game.”

Barko highlighted the importance of community support, urging fans to come out in numbers to cheer for the home team.

“We want families and friends to rally behind our women’s team. We must create an atmosphere where they feel the backing of the nation.”

He expressed confidence in his team’s composition – in their ability to rise to the occasion.

 “Our squad is a mixture of senior players and youth, and we have put a lot of effort into preparing them for this moment.

“As time goes on, we believe competitions like this will only benefit us more. If we reach the final and manage to win, it will be a huge milestone, and we will continue to build on that momentum.”

Tickets to watch the matches are available at the SIFF Academy Office, National Sports Council (NSC) Office in Point Cruz, and the Friendship Hall, Panatina – Adults: $10 Children/Students: $5

The Solomon Islands will begin their campaign against Tahiti on Sunday 18 at 5:00 pm.
