Solomon Islands Secure Semi-Final Spot with Narrow Victory Over Tahiti

In a closely contested match at the OFC Men’s U19 Championship 2024 in Samoa, the Solomon Islands U19 team emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Tahiti, clinching the top spot in Group A and earning a place in the semi-finals.

The game saw an early offensive push from the Solomon Islands, with Jimson Abana and James Leana combining effectively on numerous occasions. Tahiti’s physicality was evident throughout the opening period as they tried to disrupt the Solomon Islands’ attempts to maintain possession.

Despite having an early goal disallowed in the 20th minute, Abana continued to press forward. Both Abana and Leana had opportunities to put the Solomon Islands ahead but lacked the finishing touches. Leana missed from close range, and Abraham Morgan’s shot from inside the box went wide.

The breakthrough finally came early in the second half when Leana scored the decisive goal. A menacing run by Abana allowed him to steal the ball and deliver a precise cross for Leana, who tapped it in to give the Solomon Islands the lead.

Under the leadership of coach Batram Suri, the team then focused on holding their advantage. Abana came close to doubling the lead in a one-on-one situation with the Tahiti goalkeeper. Despite Tahiti’s efforts to equalize, the Solomon Islands defense held firm, ensuring an undefeated group stage run. The final whistle confirmed their place in the semi-finals, awaiting the runner-up from tomorrow’s Group B match deciders.
