The Solomon Islands claimed their first victory 2-0 against a solid Tonga side in Match Day 3 of the OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup.

Following a disappointing opening match loss to Tahiti, Arthur Barko’s led side came out with determination.

The host had a rather slow start to finding their rhythm – spearheaded by the dynamic Ileen Pegi, who was at the heart of their attacking play.

Pegi orchestrated much of the action, seeing plenty of the ball, but Tonga’s resolute defense made clear-cut chances difficult for a finish.

Claudia Votu had the best opportunity in the opening 20 minutes, linking up well but pulling her shot wide.

Pegi had the chance to put her side ahead at half-time only to be denied to leave goalless at the breather.

As the second half commenced, the Solomon Islands maintained pressure, with Agnes Afia firing a shot that cleared the crossbar.

The breakthrough came inevitably when Pegi found space a fired a left-footed shot to finally beat the Tongan goalkeeper. A minute after re-start Pegi then doubled the lead slipping through a crowed defense to slot home.

The win marked a strong response from the Solomon Islands, who now look ahead to their clash against New Zealand on Thursday. Tonga will face Tahiti in their final group match on the same day.
