Solomon Islands’ Charles Sau Selected to Officiate in OFC Pro League

In a landmark decision highlighting both merit and potential, Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) today celebrates the appointment of Assistant Referee Charles Sau to the match officiating team for Round 2 of the OFC Pro League in Papua New Guinea this weekend.

Mr. Sau, hailing from Waihi Village in Small Malaita and holding an OFC Accredited Assistant Referee Badge, has earned this prestigious call-up. His selection is particularly significant as officiating roles in the OFC Pro League are typically reserved for those holding the elite FIFA badge. Mr. Sau’s inclusion marks a breakthrough, recognising his exceptional talent, consistent performance, and dedication to the craft.

The appointment comes from the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), signalling a strong vote of confidence in Mr. Sau’s abilities and the development pathways within the Solomon Islands. It underscores the principle that exceptional officiating talent, irrespective of badge level, can earn the opportunity to perform at the region’s premier club competition.

“This is a moment of immense pride for Charles, his family in Small Malaita, and for football officiating in the Solomon Islands,” said Hamilton Siau, SIFF Referee Development Officer. His call-up is a testament to his hard work, sharp judgment, and the quality of our local refereeing programs. It breaks a perceived barrier and shows every aspiring match official in our country that with excellence, recognition on the biggest stage is possible.”

Charles Sau has been a standout official in domestic competitions and has impressed OFC officials during previous assignments. His progression is seen as an inspiration for the entire refereeing community in Oceania, demonstrating a clear pathway for growth.

“I am deeply honoured and humbled by this opportunity,” said Charles Sau. “I thank OFC and SIFF for their trust. This is a dream for any official in our region. I will give my absolute best to represent the Solomon Islands with fairness and professionalism. I hope this shows young boys and girls from Malaita and all our islands that through dedication, we can achieve our goals.”
