Solomon Cup starts with excitement

After two years the Solomon Cup again the grace Lawson Tama with four opening matches of the 2020 edition on the opening two days of competition as Western Tomoko were held by a late comeback from the Guadalcanal hornets and Malaita Eagles battered Choiseul Kukuvojo in Group A on Saturday’s 4 pm clash while today’s matches see Makira Ulawa Kakamora and Isabel Frigates come out as winners in Group B.

Solomon Games gold medalists Makira Ulawa Kakamora started the first match today on the front foot despite finding it difficult to open up a determined Renbel Ibis side in the first 10 minutes.  

Persistent pressing from Kakamora saw George Hanua breaks the deadlock with a smart finish in the 16 minutes and Steward Hagatepu added a second to lead 2-0 at the break.

Hanua and Hagatepu scored a second goal in the second half before veteran forward Nicholas Muri came off the bench to notch in a goal to wrap a huge win for the Kakamoras.

Hosts Honiara Warriors and Isabel Frigates contested a goalless first half in front of a huge crowd despite the down pair later in the afternoon.

Second half substitute Franster Rukumana put the Warriors in front in the 82 minutes with a likely match winner only for Isabel to put on a thrilling comeback performances moments later.

Mostyn Kelly draw level for Isabel with a clinical finish five minutes from time before Obed Havimana turn the game on its head with a near post finish.

Captain Samuel Osifelo put the icing on the cake with a late goal in the added time to seal a memorable win the Frigates.

The 2020 Solomon Cup kicks off at Lawson Tama, Honiara with two entertaining matches battling in the opening of the Solomon cup 2020 on Saturday 28th November 2020.

In the opening match on Saturday 11th, November 2020 at 2 pm, Western Tomoko and Guadalcanal Hornets shared the spoil after the Hornets side did come back from behind after being down by a 4-2 lead by the Tomoko side and mange to level the score at 4-4 before full time.

In the main match at 4pm, defending champions Malaita Eagles registered their first three points win against the Lauru Kukuvojo with a margin of 5-1.

Head coach for Malaita Eagles said that he’s very happy and impressed by his boys performance in their opening match, he also stated that despite not picking up their game format in the first half but his boys able to regroup and able to win their opening match against Lauru Kukuvojo.

Thus, Lauru Kukuvojo head coach stated that despite not able to win their opening match, he is confident that his boys can do better in their next game. He said they will work on strengthening the weak points in their team and will build up from there.

The group phase continues on Monday with two big matches as Guadalcanal Hornets take on defending champions Malaita Eagles while Western Tomoko play Temotu Arrows.
