Mataks FC are on a positive start at the OFC Futsal Men’s Champions League 2024 with a narrow 3-2 victory over Vanuatu Champions UNV Futsal Club to register the first three points.

Latest signing, Billy Afi scored the winner from the spot to earn the Francis Lafai-led men to open their account.

Both teams had moments where they were in control during the physical match, but in the end, a penalty from Billy Afi secured the three points for Mataks FC.

UNV began the game strongly and had a few early chances that forced impressive saves from Mataks FC goalkeeper Lordrick Afia.

However, Mataks FC managed to open the scoring in the 4th minute, somewhat against the run of play, when Junior Mana tapped in a shot across the goal from his brother Ellis Mana.

Solomon Islands Futsal player Clifford Misitana missed an opportunity to double the lead in the 7th minute when his left-footed shot fired wide, despite the Solomon Islanders increasing the pressure.

Alex Wilkins equalized for UNV in the 9th minute after a beautiful run and pass from Jayson Timatua.

Two minutes later, UNV had a chance to take the lead when they had a two-on-one situation, but a stray pass prevented them from capitalising on the opportunity.

With three minutes left in the half, Charles Kiniole was put through, and had a strike on target only to be denied by the Vanuatu’s side goalkeeper.

The lead was short-lived, though, as Billy Afi replied with a brilliant strike of his own, curling past a hapless Tor in the UNV FC goal. As the match progressed, yellow cards were shown more frequently as the intensity of the game increased.

Eight minutes into the second half, Junior Mana missed a golden opportunity to put Mataks FC in front, firing wide from almost point-blank range.

Following Afi’s second goal from the penalty spot, there was a flurry of action at both ends, but neither team was able to score again.

Mataks FC will take on hosts, AS PTT on Thursday at 8:00 PM (Local Time).
