Solomon Islands New Zealand import Paul Awa is settling well in the Senior Football Central – Manawatu League with Palmerston North Marist Football Club a household name in the central region.
The 21-year-old former Haura FC (Futsal) and Central Coast (Telekom S-League) player made his debut two weeks ago and is already enjoying his first season – building a career with a dream to represent the country one day in the Senior National Team.
Paul started his playing career back in his home province, Malaita – a disciplined upbringing has prompted him to pursue a career not only through playing football but also to support his family.
He enjoyed a brilliant pre-season with the side he joined in late year 2023 – making an instant impact helping his side to best prepare for the winter season which runs from April to September.
“I’m excited for this season and I’m happy. It’s a bit awkward for me at first as the only islander and being away from home and family.”
“I continue to strive to adapt to the game style here, but gradually I’m getting there – getting to know each other in the team playing together
For him taking up the stint in New Zealand was an inspiration he got from fellow Solomon Islander Michael Boso who is currently playing for Hamilton Wanderers also in New Zealand and former Solomon Islands Futsal coach Juliano Schmeling.
“Michael and Juliano are the ones that helped me to get here and play and I thank God for them and making all things possible for me away from home.”
“I want to help my team to get promoted this season – and most of all build myself for a professional career.”
“From here, I plan to come back home and help with what I learn and experience during my time here in New Zealand.”
Despite the challenges he faced, he loved every minute of it, experiencing a new culture, meeting new people, and doing what he loved most – playing football and excited for the future and opportunities that lay ahead.
