…23-man squad named

The Solomon Islands national team returns to action for a qualification slot at the FIFA World Cup 2026 – Oceania Qualifiers in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea next week.

With two crucial matches against New Caledonia on Thursday 14th November and host side PNG on Sunday 17th November it will determine two teams in Group A who will advance to the next phase of qualification by early next year.

The expanded World Cup format, now featuring 48 teams, opens up new possibilities, and Oceania’s automatic qualification spot.

Solomon Islands coach Josh Smith acknowledged that preparations have been challenging, highlighting the significance of the upcoming matches.

“We need to perform at our best for these games because qualification is essential,” he stated.

“The team is ready, and we understand the importance of these qualifiers. We will give our all against tough opponents like PNG and New Caledonia.”

Smith has made four key adjustments to the squad that previously lost to Fiji in Suva.

Among the new additions is Labasa FC forward Junior Fordney, who will bolster the attack. Defender Michael Boso also returns, bringing valuable experience to the backline. Additionally, promising newcomers Rovu Boyers and Vincent Luiga are set to make their senior debuts.

The team will depart this Thursday.
