Winning the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup 2023 glory with incredible stats is a team effort, says national Head Coach Felipe Vega-Arango.
The Solomon Islands only conceded a goal and free-scoring feat of five (5) goals from three (3) matches in the round-robin tournament that sees off host nation New Caledonia 1-0 on Saturday’s decider as the long wait is over to claim the Melanesian title for a second time.
“It has been a wonderful team effort,” Felipe said.
“Our defense has been the key to our success and it is obvious. The team has always had talented players but struggles most in defense and conceded a lot through mistakes – but now it our hard work has paid off because I always told the boys that if we have the best defense we can win and that is what exactly happened. We won.

Felipe said coming into international competitions wasn’t going to be easy, but with the players’ determination and discipline, the results speak volumes about what the preparations have been.
“We know areas that we need to improve on like passing, combination play, and possession of the ball, but the boys are working really hard and gradually they will improve and better.
This year the senior side recorded a loss, six (6) wins, and a draw from eight (8) International matches, and winning the MSG crown after twenty-nine (29) years is a massive accomplishment.
“Everyone should be happy for the players and as a team, these numbers don’t come easy but because of hard work.
Next for the team is the Sol2023 Pacific Games at home in November.
“Now that the MSG tournament is over, we continue on to the Pacific Games, and yes, we are ready! We need to be humble and keep working hard – it will be tough but with the right focus I always believe in the players.
“I want to thank the players and team officials for the team spirit shown throughout which is important. I want to thank SIFF for always being there to help and support the team, and I also want to thank the fans in the Solomon Islands and overseas for always supporting the team.
The new Champions will arrive tomorrow, Tuesday 17th October at 16:15 here in Honiara.
