The Solomon Islands’ dream of advancing in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Oceania Qualifiers was dashed after a second consecutive loss, this time a hard-fought 3-2 defeat to New Caledonia in Group A.
The match began with high intensity, but an early defensive misstep by the Solomon Islands led to a penalty awarded to New Caledonia.
They capitalized, putting the “Los Cagous” in front. The Solomon Islands, however, responded swiftly when Raphael Le’ai took advantage of a defensive error to equalize. Later, Javin Alick found space unmarked from an Atkin Kaua corner, heading the Solomon Islands into a 2-1 lead by halftime.
In the second half, Solomon Islands missed an opportunity to extend their lead, and multiple efforts were blocked by New Caledonia’s resolute defense.
Momentum shifted when New Caledonia was awarded a second penalty after a challenge by David Junior, which they converted to level the match once more.
A defensive error then allowed New Caledonia to strike their third goal, ultimately sealing their victory.
“We struggled initially to get control of the game but managed to adjust. Unfortunately, we made mistakes and gave away penalties, and you simply can’t win international matches that way,” Smith told OFC Media in a post-match interview.
“We had our moments, but consistency and better game management are what we need to progress.”
Smith fielded Rovu Boyers in the starting XI ahead of Micah Lea’alafa – giving the youngster his senior debut.
“The young players showed promise, though a lack of match fitness in these conditions was evident. Going forward, we’ll build on this experience as we prepare for our next game against PNG.
Solomon Islands will play host PNG in their final Group A match on Sunday.
“We need to regroup, strengthen our focus, and approach these games with maturity.
