Solomon Islands National Women’s Futsal Team Head Coach, Arthur Barko, is positive about the future of women and girls in futsal following the team’s historic debut at the OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup in Honiara.
Leading the first-ever national women’s futsal side wasn’t an easy task.
Coach Barko reflected on the experience as transformative for the sport and a breakthrough for the development of female athletes in the country.
The Solomon Islands team concluded the tournament with a commendable fourth-place finish and was recognized with the Fair Play Award – an invaluable experience gained.
“It’s a one-of-a-kind experience for the players and for women’s futsal in the Solomon Islands. We now have a foundation to build on and inspire more girls to get involved in the sport,” he said.

He said that the groundwork now is important for the team’s progress.
“This is just the beginning. To be competitive at the world stage, we need to start working immediately, focusing on both skill development and exposure to higher levels of competition,” Barko added.
The Solomon Islands’ participation in the OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup represents a significant step forward for women’s futsal in the region. With the passion and dedication displayed by the team, there is a renewed sense of belief that the country can establish itself as a strong contender in future competitions.
The team’s debut success will spark greater interest among young girls and provide them with a pathway.
